Jim League - Directory of Turf & Environmental Care

Jim joined the staff at Currahee Club in 2003, bringing with him 17 years of golf course experience. He began his career at the 36-hole Cherokee Town & Country Club in Dunwoody, Ga., where he worked for seven years. He then honed his skills alongside Currahee Club developer Chris Whitley at Laurel Springs in Suwanee, Ga., and was involved from the beginning at two other properties – Windermere, also in Suwanee, and at Meadowbrook Farms in Katy, Texas.

“Currahee Club is the fourth golf course community where I have been involved from the ground up,” Jim says. “One of the best parts about being involved from the beginning is that I can help design the look throughout the grounds. The transformation that has taken place here is remarkable. Larry Turner, Blake Holland, Gary Pulliam and I have been here since the beginning stages of moving dirt, and now it is breathtaking.”

Developer Bob Whitley said Jim is one of the key employees at Currahee Club.

“He’s very talented and just an invaluable part of what makes this project so exciting,” Bob says. “Jim worked with us previously, at Laurel Springs, and we’re so lucky to have him back as a member of the Currahee Club family.” The golf course presents the grounds crew a special challenge, as the level of its care is extremely high. Jim leads a golf crew of 30 and a grounds crew of five. Because Currahee Club is such a large course, many man hours are required to maintain its condition.

“He’s always pushing the envelope – with himself, his staff and the course,” Chris notes. “He has the golf course in the best shape that one could expect. It’s at tournament- level virtually day in and day out.” The course’s accolades to date are a testament to the team’s work. “I play a lot of golf and I have caddied on the Championship Tour,” says Rick Lewallen, a PGA Professional in Kannapolis, NC. “The condition of the golf course was absolutely magnificent, and the greens are some of the best I’ve ever seen – and that’s saying something.”

When Jim isn’t maintaining the course, he enjoys playing golf, fishing and woodworking. He lives in Toccoa along with his wife, Karen, and their two children – Cason and Gabrielle. They also have two furry kids, Scarlett and Rhett. Jim said he enjoys spending time outdoors, which makes his job an ideal fit. An added benefit to working at Currahee Club is the picturesque backdrop, he said.

“The views – they’re quite amazing. You can see the mountains of South and North Carolina as well as the lake. It is also a very natural setting,” Jim says. “I think it’s what residents will love most about Currahee.”
